Adam Himebauch is a Manhattan-based artist who is best known for his multifaceted approach to painting and performance art. Since moving to New York from Wisconsin in 2011, Himebauch has become a fixture on the Lower East Side, where he first found success under the moniker Hanksy. Using a pseudonym inspired by the famous British street artist, Banksy, Himebauch embarked on a six-year-long performance that utilized irony and viral imagery to satirize American politics and popular culture in the public sphere.
The past five years have marked a departure from Himebauch’s early work as the artist focused inward, revealing a new sensibility that merges public performance with art historical references. Inspired by the work of canonical masters of Constructivism, Abstract Expressionism, and Pop Art, Himebauch intuitively understands the inextricability of private and public meaning—from advertising to consumer products, politics, celebrity, and parody—and the collective power these types of images can sustain.
Himebauch’s solo exhibition, ‘Retrospective’, opens in November 2022 at Trotter&Sholer. His work has been presented in several group shows, including those at Trotter&Sholer (2019), GR Gallery (2019), Moberg Gallery (2019), and Agnes B. Galerie (2018), and his works are in numerous private collections worldwide. Himebauch has been profiled in the New York Times and Rolling Stone, among others, and is a founding partner of the restaurants Kiki’s and Forgtmenot on Manhattan’s Lower East Side. As a commercial artist, Himebauch collaborated with Comme des Garçons and Nike, among others. In 2019, Taschen named him one of the top illustrators in the world.
